Topic Exploration through the Maze: The importance of teamwork to explorers

Overview: As part of a 5th grade unit on Exploration, students will participate in a kinesthetic activity that will “put them in the place” of explorers.  They will consider how finding their way as a team through a maze is like the experiences explorers went through. This is an application of The Maze activity in The Systems Thinking Playbook by Dennis Meadows and Linda Booth Sweeney.

Standards Students understand the human experience through time; interpret historical events; and make connections among cultures, people, and events.
Know the reasons for European exploration and colonization of North America.
