Writing an Animal Report

Language Arts

Second Grade

Overview:  After reviewing many non-fiction animal books and looking at text features that make the reports about animals interesting to the reader, I had the class pretend to be book editors and brainstorm things that would build a quality report and things that would “drain” quality out of their reports.  I used the “bathtub graphic” of the stock and flow tool on the overhead and listed the ideas the students came up with on the transparency under builds and drains.
