Practice Scenario #4: Air Pollution
To complete this practice scenario, follow the steps below. Use the resources in the right-hand column to complete
the steps as needed.

1. Listen to the radio report. While listening, create a list of elements from the story that are rising and/or falling.

Listen to the report.

View a list of elements.

2. Optional:
Create a stock/flow map

or create a connection circle as a precursor to identifying loops.

Using these strategies can help in finding feedback loops when the circular connections are not immediately obvious.

Resources

  • Download handout – Stock/flow template
  • View a map with some elements represented
  • View an example of a finished map
  • Download directions for creating a connection circle
  • View a connection circle example
  • View a video clip showing a connection circle being created (being developed)
  • Download handout – Template with seven graphs
  • Download handout – Template with ten graphs
  • Download handout – Template without graphs
  • Download handout – Template with elements from the story
  • View an example of a finished connection circle

3. Create one or more causal loops from information described in the radio report. If you did step 3 above, look for loops that are embedded in your stock/flow map or connection circle.

  4. Debrief and see examples.
